Thanks to you, we've surpassed our goal!
We offer our deepest gratitude to everyone for helping Sanshin Zen Community end the year on a stronger financial footing. We have been working very hard to make up
ground for revenues lost due to the pandemic. For the first time, Sanshin formed an annual campaign committee, with a goal of raising $25,000 by the end of last year to
support our practice. Because of your generosity, we surpassed our goal!
Thank you to everyone who supported our efforts and especially to members of the campaign committee: Normal Fogelberg, Mark Fraley, Tonen O’Connor, Komyo Melfi,
Laura Miller, Karla Passalacqua, Henry Coffey, Neil Chase, Gene Elias, and Jeff Alberts.
Our dharma community’s generosity supports the everyday life of Sanshin as we work together to take care of our facilities, make practice resources available, and simply
gather for zazen, work and study. Please watch our website for a variety of exciting new practice opportunities in 2024. We’ll be focusing on our lineage & legacy, offering Sangha Stewardship workshops for practice leaders and board members around the region, and continuing development of our newest division, the Sawaki Nyoho-e Treasury. We look forward to your participation in these activities as well as our regular weekly practice, either virtually or in person. It’s your involvement that makes these things possible.

Same sutra, new chapter: Join us in writing the next page in the Sanshin story
Dear sangha member:
I'm sure you know that this is an exciting time of transition here at Sanshin, and it's time to think together about our sustainability. In June, we celebrated our 20th anniversary as my teacher and Sanshin founder Shohaku Okumura stepped back from day-to-day leadership at Sanshin and handed the baton to me. Maybe you were here in person or online, or you've watched recordings of the events. I'm grateful to Okumura Roshi for his dedication to the practice he learned from his teachers and his willingness to bring that practice to us here in Bloomington. Now it's our turn to carry that story forward. Our family style is an important part of the national dharma conversation, and Sanshin is keeping that practice style alive and available. (To learn more about that, get your free copy of our e-booklet, Understanding Sanshin Style.)
Part of determining the way forward is committing to maintain real financial stability, and contributing to our Annual Fund appeal is an easy way to provide your financial support to Sanshin. You'll be helping to replenish the emergency funds we needed to spend during the pandemic in order to preserve our practice and keep it going, allowing everyone to continue to practice together, first virtually and then in person once again. Your gift also supports the everyday life of Sanshin as we work together to take care of our facilities, make practice resources available, and simply gather for zazen, work and study.
Your gift of support toward Sanshin's sustainability might be a one-time offering, but we also encourage monthly contributions. Sangha members have said this is the most convenient way to give, since your donation is automatically transferred from your credit card or bank account, and you can change or cancel anytime. It also makes our monthly income more predictable. If you are already a monthly donor, can you raise your giving level going forward? Use the buttons below to make your contribution in the way that works best for you.
Of course, your presence and participation is the most vital gift you can offer, since without practitioners there is no practice. (In fact, our September sesshin completely filled and left a waiting list.) Sanshin's activities are not "programs" that we stage for "guests," performances by others for which you pay your ticket price, take your seat, and watch what happens around you. They are simply the regular, interconnected life of the practice community as a whole. As we turn this page of transition, please join with your sangha friends in making sure our community has the resources it needs to write our next chapter together. As Uchiyama Roshi said, "It is essential to live with the conviction that you are making history for the next generation. There isn't anyone else around who will do it. You have to realize this and plant your roots deeply."
