Sharing the reality of BuddhaA two-part virtual discussion series led by Tonen O'ConnorTwo pairs of meeting times (register for one pair):
Two Thursdays, 7 - 8:30 pm ET -- Sep 10 & 17 ~~OR~~ Two Fridays, 10 - 11:30 am ET -- Sep 11 & 18 Practitioners are invited to join Tonen O'Connor, resident priest emerita of the Milwaukee Zen Center and longtime friend of Sanshin, for a two-part virtual discussion via Zoom. Continuing our explorations of key tenets in the Soto Zen tradition (we explored sokushin zebutsu last spring) we find two more to consider:
Exploring these two connected teachings is particularly timely within the context of this year's overall practice theme at Sanshin: The World of Soto Zen.
Registration is closed. |
Two virtual discussions
Rev. Tonen O’Connor will lead virtual discussions focused on each phrase, seeking to discover how practicing zazen allows us to share in the reality of Buddha and how the Buddha’s dharma is shared with others through authentic transmission. She will deliver opening remarks, and then it is hoped that everyone will participate in an open discussion. Short background readings will be distributed before each session.
Session 1. Butsu no sugata 仏の姿 The practice of zazen is realized as the form of Buddha.
What is important about zazen posture? Is the “form of buddha” the one we see in statues? What about zazen makes it “the form of buddha?” Can this form be realized in our daily lives?
Session 2. Seiden no buppo 正伝の仏法 The authentic transmission of the Buddha dharma.
What do we mean by “transmission” and by “authentic?” What is transmitted? Does transmission happen only between master and student? Is transmission a one-way process?
