"The added benefit of creating a budget is that we have the chance to study our administrative and recordkeeping systems and see where there may be gaps and how we can make improvements," Hoko said. "Doju Layton (office manager) has been integral to helping us understand how things really work."
Because the budget reflects the entire life of Sanshin, it has to take into account proposed 2017 program offerings, work projects and other activities, as well as purchases of equipment and supplies. The budget will also determine the fundraising and development initiatives Sanshin will undertake. "We have to work on a number of plans simultaneously so that the budget can be as accurate as possible," Hoko added. "Getting the priority objectives in place has been an important part of that effort."
The Finance Committee plans to complete a budget draft in time for consideration and adoption by the full board in November or December.
