January 7 - 10, 2021

with Vice Abbot Hoko
Limited to 22 participants

Registration CLOSES DECEMBER 31, 2020.

Sesshin at Sanshin is an opportunity to practice without distraction.  We set aside the usual activities -- or entertainments -- of temple life, like work periods, meetings with teachers and dharma talks, and focus completely on zazen.  We practice in complete silence following a 4 am to 9 pm daily schedule that consists simply of fourteen 50-minute periods of zazen with one-hour breaks for meals.  This sesshin-without-toys style of practice was created by our dharma grandfather, Kosho Uchiyama Roshi and practiced at Antaji in Kyoto, Japan.  We carry on and offer this tradition of our lineage here at Sanshin.

While sesshin at Sanshin is intensive and participants are serious about maintaining silence and focus, it is not harsh or unsympathetic.  Practitioners are encouraged to take care of themselves while at the same time fully entering into the challenge and opportunity of the sesshin.  It's helpful to have read Uchiyama Roshi's Opening the Hand of Thought for background information about this style of sesshin and to have had some prior experience of intensive practice.  Guidelines for sesshin and retreat are available here.

The cost of registration two weeks before the start of the retreat is $165; within 2 weeks the cost is $190.
Registration will not be accepted within one week of the start date.

PLEASE CONSIDER YOUR REGISTRATION CAREFULLY.  Once you've registered, we expect that you will fully participate in sesshin on all of the days for which you've signed up, beginning with the first zazen bell of the morning and ending with the last bell of the evening.  Casually deciding to quietly disappear before the conclusion of your expected participation is not respectful or unselfish and is strongly discouraged.  For more on this issue, please see this item in our FAQ.

Accommodations
You may choose to sleep in the zendo, in our dorm or somewhere offsite for which you've made arrangements.   There is no additional charge for sleeping on the zendo floor with your own bedding while you're attending a Sanshin practice event for which you've registered.  No need to add anything to your shopping cart; just indicate on your registration form that that's your plan.  If you prefer a dorm space, please reserve below.

Dorm accommodations are not included in the event fee and must be reserved separately.  Signing up for an event does not guarantee you a bed.  Dorm space is not held until paid for.
